1st PSFD Bowling Cup
(12/03/08)
Last November 30, 2008 at the Paeng’s Midtown Bowl of Robinson’s Place Ermita, more than twenty Deaf and some Hearing individuals participated PSFD’s first activity – the Bowl for a Cause: 1st PSFD Bowling Cup. The mentioned activity was organized by the federation in preparation of the Philippines for its first time participation in the coming 21st Summer Deaflympics that will be held in Taipei, Taiwan on September 5 to 15, 2009. PSFD announced that the bowling cup is more than a game because it also served as a try-out in selection of top three men and women that will become Philippines bet to Deaflympics event or, in other words, First Filipino Deaflympians (Deaf Athletes).
The game began after the national anthem led by PFD ex-officio, Raphael Domingo. This was followed by welcome remarks of PSFD president, Ma. Lovella Catalan, who thanked all donors and sponsors of the event, and also all the participants who had shown interest in PSFD’s first activity. PSFD Sports Director, Richard Jay Sunico, explained the rules and regulations during the game and added that both Deaf and Hearing were welcome to play and bring home the prizes but only Deaf will be qualified to be Deaflympians. Additionally, he also explained that Lovella may join the bowling games but will not be able to receive any prize from the bowling cup as she was already a Deaflympian reserve for Philippine Team because to her outstanding achievements in bowling games of both national and international levels.
Right after the games, winners were announced. In men’s division: Ariscel Lobo, who was once participated in 2nd Asia-Pacific Deaf Bowling Championship in Jeju City, South Korea back in 2007, garnered the first place. This was followed by Lovella’s brother, Paul Catalan for second place, but unable to be one of the Deaflympians because only Deaf people are qualified for the said event. Third place went to a native of Bacolod City, who voluntarily went to Manila to be part of the bowling games and to become part of Deaflympics, Paul Pacis. In women’s division: first place went to another native of Bacolod city, Ma. Cecilia Villacin. Second place was Lovella’s mom, Rosalinda Catalan, but also unable to be part of Deaflympics. Jade Dy ranked third among all women participants.
In behalf of the whole Filipino Deaf community, the PSFD with great pride, warmly welcomed the first Filipino Deaflympians that will represent our country to the call of international Deaf sports communities in Deaflympics, and they are: Ariscel Lobo, Paul Pacis, Christopher Lloyd Uy (who ranked fourth), Ma. Lovella Catalan, Ma. Cecillia Villacin, and Jade Dy.
The PSFD would like to extend warm appreciation to its sponsors and donors: the Philippine Sports Commission, Paeng’s Midtown Bowl of Robinson’s Place Ermita, Mr. Ernesto Manalo and family, Mr. Abeto Uy and Family, Mr. Alex Lim and Family, and Ms. Suti Luakian and Family.
Finally, the federation (PSFD) is now calling the attention of the whole Philippines to support our budding athletes to the prominent sport games of the Deaf – the Deaflympics. |
